This guy right here is James Paul Moody, the sixth officer on the RMS Titanic. Yeah. That one.
Now, James here was a junior officer, and the rule for junior officers is that they get sent off first to command the lifeboats. Also, he was the lowest ranking officer, and only 24 years old. Of all of the officers, he would be the most likely to survive a catastrophe, right?
This man willingly gave up his place on a lifeboat to Fifth Officer Harold Lowe. “You go,” he said, “I’ll get the next one.”
He never got that next one. His last known whereabouts are pretty sketchy, but several survivors place him as trying to free one of the last collapsible lifeboats when a large wave swept dozens in the area, including said lifeboat overboard. Moody spent his last moments trying to save others, and for that he is a hero.
Also he was kinda hot, so, there’s that.
